Rejection Letters
Cutting Off Contact Family

Dear {Name},

I don't want to spend time together anymore. I understand that we're still family, and that, due to our mutual love for {Names}, we will likely still see each other at {Family Events} on occasion. During those times I would prefer that you didn't speak to me.

We are adults now, and my relationships with my adult family members are based on the same boundaries of mutual affection, respect, and trust that I have with my friends. If one of my friends had screamed at me, made physically aggressive movements toward me, and called me names the way you did last week, I would have cut them out of my life immediately. It took me a long time to realize that I have been explaining away and swallowing this behavior from you for years, and it has never actually stopped, even when I explained how scared and hurt and insulted it made me feel.

I would appreciate it if you would leave the rest of our family out of this. I have no desire to incite gossip or make things difficult for you, but I no longer feel the need or inclination to put effort into a relationship with someone who is constantly mistreating me. Thank you for respecting this decision.
